Riley San Remo
For 1927 Motor Show, the Riley 9 range was extended with a new cheaper saloon added. The Riley San Remo was a 'five stud' detachable artillery wheeled basic saloon made by Allan Riley's firm 'Midland Motor Body Company' on Widdrington Road Coventry . This was the cheapest of the two saloons on offer, visually similar to the Riley Monaco, but sitting higher off the ground plus in the height of the body as in the later Riley Falcon. Fabric bodied, with four centrally hinged doors, on a seasoned ash frame with grey moquette upholstery but was not a popular seller and after two years was replaced by the more upmarket Riley Biarritz saloons.

Just one example of the San Remo has been identified in Gloucestershire YC 7391 ( chassis number 60661*, 1929 9hp ), This car is actually a transitional car registered in mid August 1929 long after the artillery wheels were discontinued earlier in the year for the 'in house' designed wire wheels. The company obviously had a late Riley San Remo cash order so used spare steel artillery wheels on a Monaco fabric body of the new season 1927-9 pattern without the normal Riley Monaco external boot and with the fitted grid on the back of the car (like the side valves) for holding the spare wheel. The normal 1929 fabric Riley Monaco used dropped footwells instead of the flat floor boards as sold in the earlier Riley San Remo cars and 'tin Tourers' of 1929 and this feature is present in this car ie is not a real San Remo. Fabric cars were by Hancock and Warren using dropped footwells into the chassis space and sold more for sports vehicles. The tin ones of this time were by Midland Motor Bodies ie Riley and as sold more for family cars had cheaper wooden floorboards for children or adults with a cramped sitting position in the rear so the San Remo was designed to sit between both types.
The history of this car is most unusual with one owner until 1966 ( John Corah's father who supplied the top photograph ). The next owner from 1966 took her to South Africa for four years hence the label and good dry air for old cars He also overhauled the engine between 1984 and 1985 when it was sold. The present owner has had the car since 1985 resulting in a totally original car however transitional it is and like many early Riley's a sole survivor.
